We’ve just heard news about Meghan and Harry’s latest project, and it’s a major power move. The couple is allegedly working with a trusted journalist to release an authorized biography.
Thoroughly Modern Royals
Although no official details have been released yet, it’s rumored that the book is provisionally titled “Thoroughly Modern Royals: The Real World of Harry and Meghan.”
The question is how much tea these two are going to spill. Is this a scorched earth operation that will reveal everyone’s secrets and scandals? Or will the couple focus on their charity work?
‘Mail on Sunday’ Court Case
Harry and Meghan have a tense relationship with the press, to put it mildly. They recently announced a zero cooperation policy with the UK tabloids. They’re also in the middle of a court case against the Mail on Sunday.
The Mail on Sunday is Thomas Markle’s go-to tabloid for talking about his daughter. The current legal case will determine whether the publication of Meghan’s letter to her dad was a breach of privacy and copyright infringement.
So you should take it with a very large grain of salt when the MoS or its sister publication, the Daily Mail, put out negative stories about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Diana’s former private secretary, Patrick Jephson, told the tabloid that, “[c]ollaborating with pliable authors and magazine journalists while shunning those deemed awkward is standard royal practice, but for Harry and Meghan it’s not just about image – for them it’s business: a vital part of the self-branding and marketing process.”
When the alternative is battling hostile and intrusive journalists, it’s no surprise that Harry and Meghan turned to Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand to tell their story to the world.
Who Are Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand?
Omid Scobie is the Royal Editor at Large for Harper’s Bazaar. He also hosts the podcast “The HeirPod” to talk about the Royal Family (and yes, he has a crisp British accent that’s pleasant to listen to).
Scobie has traveled with and interviewed both the Cambridges and the Sussexes, but he clearly has a strong connection with Harry and Meghan. Depending on who you ask, Scobie is either one of the few journalists that the press-wary couple trusts–or the hand-picked mouthpiece to spread their propaganda.
Carolyn Durand is an American journalist and the Royal contributor for Elle and Oprah Magazine. Like Scobie, Durand has extensively covered both the Cambridges and the Sussexes.
Diana: Her True Story
Why is it such a power move? Because it follows in the footsteps of Princess Diana. “Diana: Her True Story,” written by Andrew Morton, revealed the inner life of the world’s most glamorous–and miserable–woman.
Written in 1992, the book completely rocked the Royal Family. It exposed the “raw, unfiltered” truth of Diana’s life and her desperate unhappiness. The book allowed Diana to seize control of her public image–something that Harry and Meghan are also keen to do.
You can watch Morton speak about the process of writing the book below.
